Here are some telltale signs that your pet may be experiencing pain or an onset of joint issues. \u00a0Please be advised that these are general signs and can also be indicative of other problems, so if you see any of these signs, consult with your veterinarian so an accurate diagnosis can be made:<\/span><\/div>\n

1) Is your pet slowing down on walks, or can’t go as far? \u00a0Are they sitting down intermittently or refusing to move beyond a certain point?<\/span><\/div>\n
2) Is your pet slow to arise out of a lying down or sitting position? \u00a0Do you see them limp for a few steps when they first start to move?<\/span><\/div>\n
3) Is your pet more lethargic and less active during the day?<\/span><\/div>\n
4) Does your pet pant more than usual, especially without having just done some type of activity?<\/span><\/div>\n
5) Does your pet seem more restless and can’t settle as easily, especially at night?<\/span><\/div>\n
6)Has your pet started to hesitate to jump in\/out of the car or hesitate going up\/down the stairs?<\/span><\/div>\n
7) Does your pet have trouble walking on hard surface\/slick floors? \u00a0Have you seen them slip and\/or fall on smooth surfaces?<\/span><\/div>\n
8) Do you find any areas of increased heat over their spine, hips or other joints as you run your hands over their body?<\/span><\/div>\n

Here are a few tips from our clinical advisor that every pet owner can use to assist their animals maintain health and fitness throughout their life:<\/div>\n

1)<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Keep your pet at an appropriate weight<\/strong>. \u00a0This is probably the one most important thing you can do to help your pet. \u00a0Just as extra weight can lead to increased risks for heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and many other conditions in humans, so too, can it affect your pet. \u00a0 You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs fairly easily as you run your hands along the side of their body. \u00a0Also, they should have an “hourglass” figure, with a tuck in their waist, behind their ribcage, as you are looking at them from the top side. \u00a0A nice visual reference, with more detailed information can be found at \u00a0https:\/\/www.purina.co.uk\/dogs\/health-and-nutrition\/exercise-and-weight-management\/dog-body-condition-tool<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

2) Keep your pet moderately active.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0A steady amount of moderate exercise regularly will help your pet maintain muscle mass and keep the joints moving freely. \u00a0Avoid the “weekend warrior” syndrome, where the pet only gets very short leash walks during the week, then goes out for a much longer hike, swim or \u00a0ball play session only a day or two a week. \u00a0This can lead to unnecessary pain in the joints and possible injury as the pet is not properly conditioned for the sudden increase in activity.<\/span><\/div>\n

3) Have your pet see their veterinarian on a regular basis.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0In addition to checking heart, lungs and making sure your pet has the necessary vaccines, your veterinarian will also provide a hands-on exam, looking for tight muscles, limited range of motion and areas of pain. \u00a0They can assist you in choosing supplements and prescribe medications as necessary to assist your pet’s health and vitality.<\/span><\/div>\n

4) Feed a high-quality pet food.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Look for foods with a minimum of wheat, corn , soy and by-products in them. \u00a0These ingredients have a higher incidence of allergic reactions, which can lead to itching and hair loss. \u00a0The premium brand foods are more expensive, but you can usually feed a smaller amount, since there are fewer “filler” ingredients.<\/span><\/div>\n

5) Consider support hardware for aging pets.<\/strong>\u00a0For senior pets, provide a good quality, orthopedic-type dog bed for them that is supportive but soft to cushion their joints. \u00a0Also be aware that as your pet ages, they may have more trouble gaining traction on hardwood and slick floors. \u00a0You may place rug runners or area rugs in the areas where your pet walks the most, to prevent slips and falls. \u00a0There are also products such as booties, rubberized socks and rubberized toe grips which can be placed onto the pet’s feet to give them more traction.<\/span><\/div>\n

6) Consult with a rehab therapist or vet.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0If you have a veterinary rehabilitation therapist or rehabilitation- trained veterinarian near you, it is well-worth getting an appointment with them to evaluate your pet, especially if you see your pet slowing down or having problems with mobility. \u00a0These practitioners are experienced in palpating (feeling) for tight and\/or weak muscles, stiffness in joints and assessing what is causing the mobility issues. \u00a0They will recommend treatments and educate you in a home exercise\/activity program as well as providing information on assistive devices, such as harnesses, booties and carts, which will help both you and your pet.
